If the bunker can be snagged and fished live or fresh in a school of feeding bluefish, you will catch fish. While big lures catch massive fish, so do live bunker or chunk bunker or mackerel. Hope your fishing days will be cloudy and the wind from the west. There have always been big blues in Norwalk waters.īest times of course are dawn and dusk, with night-time fishing also good. Waters west of Norwalk, down around Mamaroneck, Greenwich, City Island and spots across the way like Eaton’s Neck and Oyster Bay have been productive. Winners have come from all areas of the Sound over the years. Those odds improve even more for the fisherman who has his or her tackle in top shape and has spent some time scouting the best areas to fish. That means the odds of coming up a winner are better than ever. Not as many anglers register but neither are there as many people fishing these days.

Today, the runner-up-winning prizes are less and the registration fee more, but it remains a good competition. In addition to the 25K grand prize, the next five winners also won substantial amounts in the thousands. The contest evolved and grew to several thousand participants every year.

I seem to recall that someone caught the tagged blue a couple of weeks after the contest one year, and everybody sympathized. The first two or three years it was a tagged bluefish competition with a million-dollar prize for the lucky person who caught the tagged blue - but nobody won. It started even before the arrival of monster blues. Suddenly the big blues started showing up and WICC came up with the contest.
